some notorious electronic music talents have started their careers as percussionists. and so did yaya, but his tale is different to all the rest. his new release for desolat takes a unique, upbeat approach to 4/4 beats: combining heartfelt benin influences - samples from dialogue and traditional ballads - with the stretched-out tension and release of balearic and the bubbling pops and stutters of tech house, plus the occasional kickback to a commodore64 high score melody. raised in turin, italy, rhythm was his lifeblood for yassin legali, also known as yaya, from an early age. his father was the lead vocalist and percussionist for mbamina, a band consisting of musicians from benin, zaire, italy and cameroon. mbamina released eight albums, collaborated with artists like manu dibango and salif keita, were sponsored by paco rabanne and played all over africa, including a show for the presidents of senegal and france. their final show was with james brown in paris in 1985 - the year yaya was born. well-versed in his fathers legacy, yaya grew up playing drums and djembe, and at the age of 15, began performing as a percussionist in turin clubs. just one year later, he was already djing, playing funk, soul, afrobeat, house and garage. manu dibango and fela kuti found a spot in his crate next to records by masters at work and dimitri from paris: contrasts of rhythm and structure that pervade his music to this very day.

played by villalobos & raresh !! what a way to start off 2009, a very strong ep delivered from catwash aka chris carrier & dj w!ld with remix from lemos & kreon. groovabilisme (original) hits with its’ crafty tech-house stomp, killer kick, and fun tribal groove. a very interesting concept on this production, as the deep grounding rhythm is super floor filling, yet the space between gives it the perfect air for the huge sub that just rolls this cut to the top of the charts. a sure shot for all players. kreon’s mix stylizes with more jack then jack himself. his vox arrangements give his cut a pop, lock, and rock it knack for the true school dancer. this remix takes any spot in a set, it’s got the capability to kick it big or be slow & deep, depending on how a player wishes to pitch it- a brilliant & effective production. lemos rocks the bells a for main lead rhythm, an excellent perspective to make for a clever & diversity ep. his mix creates a driving hypnotic bender with enough thump & smack to keep the bells intact and still lead the floor into a seductive sound scape of a moving utopia.

on the second white owl release, craig takes maya angelous famous poem phenomenal woman and puts it to song. deep bass and plinky keys swirl around the powerful words. the mix on the flip is uplifting and big, with those piano chords that just hit the right spot.

your know you are doing something right when greg wilson comes knocking at your door for some disco edit action. such is the life now for croation nu disco gem ilija rudmen. after a series of releases on labels rong, infant and deep freeze, bearfunk were quick to grab dance disorder and wasted no time in asking their studio neighbours faze action to step up. their synth bass, low slung and sleazy remix, with a dose of their trademark strings hits the spot. this sits snuggly with ilijas original which mixes in real bass and guitar with his analog heavy funk laden grooves.

pure analogue italo-esque vocoder tackle from berlin that really hits the spot. pretty face is midtempo and slightly menacing and happy birthday shifts the tempo up a bit and treats the vocals to the other end of the vocoder spectrum. they are totally separate but sequenced so you can let the side run thru (a trick we pinched from disconet and hot tracks) or take your pick

the pump ep is a typically genre-bending mixture of pumping, groovy house tracks, exploring the many sides of this highly regardedproducers fruitful repertoire. lead track the pump is a vivacious number that takes a clean, modern house aesthetic as a base and later infuses it with a dirtier, earlier morning vibe, with phoniques playful use of the resplendent chord stabs. its a slow burner indeed, and yet another example of his effortless arrangement talents. fancying a spot of fresh air and a trip into the audio countryside, bike ride is an even more playful journey into the kooky electronic world of phoniques studio outings. solid drums and warm sub bass provide the energy for all manner of pops and tweaks to unfold. its another deeper track but be warned it still has the power to lift a crowd up onto its tip-toes. going down more of a techno route, tooltime completes the package and breaks out the big guns for some serious heads down dancefloor ignition. urgent and tight late night action, not for the faint of heart, the tracks title is too modest - it should really read ‚ peak time

played by loco dice, tom clark... a booty call. the title says it all, a call for all booties - big or small - to migrate to the dance floor. an orgy of percussion and low end rumble lift you from your head bobbing slump up against the wall and firmly plants you right in the sweet spot of the dance floor, where the rising energy hits a climax. there is a pause and then the most noticeable sound of the track hits: the booty call. one artist credited with invigorating the kindisch label, is the young frankfurt based producer daniel mehlhart, whose first (and hopefully not last) release, origami was a highlight of last summer. in his booty call remix, one can immediately hear his style thrust into the main groove of the track, injecting it with a heavier feel and bringing forth a whole slew of new effects and sounds including a hypnotizing african vocal. this marks a small milestone as the 20th release of the label.

another quality dmx krew masterpiece we at turbo are longtime fans of dmx krew, so its a real honor to work with him again 6 years after his last contribution to our now defunct sub-label white leather. we dont normally trace an artists history or include much biography in our press releases, but we feel the need in this case to pay our respects to a long and brilliant career. with all the crap that gets paraded around nowadays its easy to forget who the real masters are... ed dmx is one of them. ive always held a soft spot for ed, he was one of my favorite producers in the proto-electro heyday. hearing his live version of the knight rider theme at sona (tigas club circa 96) was (believe it or not) a revelation. of all the artists id met up until then, he was the coolest, he could play synths better than anyone id ever heard, he had the balls to do vocals in his live-set but he was a sweet, softspoken, and super funny guy. for reasons ive never understood, eds pop side didnt seem to take off and for awhile things took a distinctly experimental turn... interesting stuff, but a departure

responsible for this tartelet release is debutant mhm one aka morten halborg-møller. he s a local lad from copenhagen who has decided to give something back to the world of electronic music that he loves so much. before he decided to sit in the producer chair, he spend huge amounts of time on his copenhagen based kill your telly promotion. a promotion which has more than 5 succesful years on it s back and has featured a huge tally of big name bookings. said promotion at which he started out his djing career resulting in him being one of the most sought after djs in denmark. being the creative and gifted spirit that he is, music and clubbing is not the only thing that keep him occupied. he also expresses himself via visual artwork earning the fourth spot in the renowned graphic art collective that is bottega areté.... and oh yeah ...did we mention what a nice bloke he is? a1: the a side features a funky little groover that will fit well into a club where punters prefer to dance. the track is build around a playful bassline hook accompanied by a simple and catchy vocal (by who made who member tomas hoffding) a really sweet minimal workout for sure, that really does the trick. b1: on the flip side we get served a dish of bass heavy house. this time it s dutch house supremo melon who sorts out the remix treatment and turns bubububadub into a tribal ish affair. suited for big clubs? check. sexy? check. playable? very much so.

tony lionni is the new signing here at versatile. born in liverpool, his love for the music was passed on to him by his father, a record collector and former dj, who introduced him to crate-digging at the early age of eight. his roots stem from black music. hip-hop will become his musical bases before he discovers the acid-house explosion at the mythical hacienda in manchester. he naturally starts mixing in the late 80s/early 90s, playing a mixture of rare groove, deep-jazz, deep house, etc. he then turns to production and is noticed by gilb-rs fine-tuned ears who signs him on the spot. releases on labels like wavetec and mule musiq are planned further in the year. listening to papaia one cant help to think that 2008 will be the year that progressive house will make its comeback. it has been a long time since we had heard such a simple and effective kick and bass intro. the hi-hat then come in along with a small acid sound. the filter opens before the rhythm accelerates. in the middle of the track, the main melody gets dropped in, arms raise and the listener gets lost in the darkness of the night. on the b side, shuffle explores the deeper roots of lionni. the title is surely a reference to the beat, which is predominant in this track. once again the hi-hats are up infront mixed to percussive sounds, which undulate to the rhythm of the bass, making this track an essential tool, ready-to-use and be mixed into almost anything
